Outpost Tavern to Close
« on: 12/02/2009 08:36 PM »

The infamous Outpost Tavern, which is located just down the road from JSC in Houston, TX, has been the Astronaut bar & hangout of choice since the days of Mercury & Gemini.

Yesterday, the owners announced that it will close for good in Jan 2010.

There have been many similar announcements in the past, but the JSC community has always come together to generate the funds required to keep The Outpost open.

However, the owners say that this time, closure is definite, as the land on which The Outpost is located has been sold to a new owner – who has no interest in keeping The Outpost open.

OP Is Closing In January 2010
(posted 8:25am Dec 1, 2009)

The Outpost is Closing. . .

. . . And this time, it is for good.

Together, Gene Ross, my mother, Sharon, and myself, have kept the Outpost Tavern going for the last thirty years, it has stayed open.  My Mom and Gene being the bulk of it, I was meant to be the “Closer” of this deal! J  Good or bad, whatever anyone thinks of how we did it, we kept it open for you!

However, like many good things in life, sometimes “we” are not in charge.  In this case, the property that the OP sits on has been going through many changes ownership-wise, since Pete Wright died, and there has always been a certain air of uncertainty about what may happen in the future.  Well, the future is here.  I have been informed that the property has been sold to another party.

Rather than wait, wondering when or if someone would come in and say “get out by Friday,”  I would like to give everyone notice that in January, we close.  Finished.  The End.

This way, we can enjoy the place a while longer, and make plans on how to save what we can.  I would rather have the Outpost close my way, instead of having someone shut us down one day without so much as a “fare-well.”

All-in-all, you must admit that it has been an interesting and fun run for this little bar.  I hope that in the next several weeks, as we wind down the Outpost Tavern, we can see old faces once again.  I was about eleven-years old when the OP first opened as “The Outpost,” and now I have two kids and just celebrated my something-ith-birthday.  Some who have been coming in have been there for longer, since it was Fort Terry’s.  You know who you are!

This is not a time to get mad, but instead to remember all the fun that everyone has had here.  Most everyone who has been around here for any length of time has known for years that eventually, this day would come.  I hate it.  You hate it.  But, here we are.

In 2010, it will be thirty years (yes!) since Gene bought the place from Terry.  So, to end the Outpost Tavern, we will have one hell of a blow-out thirtieth Anniversary party.  Hope everyone can attend!

Love to everyone,

Stephanie

Darn it! I was hoping to make a trip to Houston next year and to stop by that little bar just to say I had been there, but that won't happen before January. This kind of thing always happens. The historic little places get shut down by new owners. Guess that's life. But it's still a bummer! If those walls could talk...

Being serious here: Why can't they put it on the back of one of those house-moving trucks*, and put it in a museum or something.
I'm sure the JSC community could help to arrange/fund that.

That bar contains far too much history to just let it die.

I was thinking the same thing, Space Pete. It wouldn't be quite the same I'm sure, but still, it was such a big part of astronaut and space community life as I understand it, that it's an absolute crime to tear the place down.

That is, in fact, how it got to its current location in the first place. It was originally portable base housing over at Ellington, and was trucked to NASA Road 1 and El Camino Real, where it became the Outpost.

Doubt the roads could accommodate the reverse trip now. NASA Parkway now has a freeway bypass that ends at an overpass at El Camino, and the frontage roads are a bit narrow for it. But they might be able to truck it south over the Egret Bay bridge.

I like to idea of moving it to Space Center Houston, but I shudder to think what the costs would be.

I don't think the roads could accommodate that now that the bypass has been built. Would probably have to disassemble it in order to get it to SCH.
