Don't miss this! Haven't read about it on the forums so I post it. It's only a sneak peek of the whole documentary. When completed will be freely available for dowload (under the Creative Commons license).

Preview of the first rough cut of "Contact Light" - a 17-minute documentary that follows in real time the first Moon landing (Apollo 11), with newly digitized footage from the Lunar Module's 16mm camera and rare images of Mission Control with synced sound.

Moonscape is a free and freely downloadable high-definition documentary about the first Moon landing, funded and produced by space enthusiasts from all over the world.

It is a free documentary, but making it is not cheap! So if you want to help you're more than welcome :-) More info at http://moonscape-project.blogspot.com/2010/08/moonscape-project.html .

A very nice piece of work.

You gotta love Aldrin's comment at about 13:10:  "You're, uh, pegged on horizontal velocity."  Considering the circumstances, that's a classic piece of understatement, right up there with "Doctor Livingstone, I presume."

EDIT:  Typo.

Great stuf!!

I've posted a link before on the apollo 11 descent audio complete with mcc loop. (runs over 1 hour). I'll post it once more because I think it goes nicely with this subject. (not meaning to hijack the thread)

One thing that strikes me is how young everyone looks.

Looks and sounds good

My only critism would be displaying of fractions in the subtitles

Could the subtitle file be edited to use '½' rather than '1/2'

That is fantastic, thank you so much.   I like seeing Eagle's landing gear early in  the descent, you see it wiggling and drifting a little....  it's like seeing Eagle  flying !!!
At the time of Apollo 11, the most striking photo to me when they got back was the one of Buzz climbing down the ladder....   and also Neil in the LM after the moonwalk.  :)

BUMP in response to Neil Armstrong's passing today and in tribute to his mission.

For those of us who want to re-live that day and for those that were not born yet but want to experience this historic moon landing, here is the latest and newest version of this documentary.

In 2011 I got to work with Neil Armstrong on a study we were doing for NASA. On the last day of our project he asked if he could show us a video. He then got up and showed us how he landed on the Moon.

It was pretty cool.

LOL -- yeah, that's sounds pretty cool.  Maybe even a little more than that.

So where's the free download they keep talking about? All I can find is Flash players. The MP4s seem to have evaporated, or at least gotten obscured.

EDIT - Found it. It's at , click on the download button and select the desired resolution. Now I'll be able to move it to a fast device and see how it looks without internet delays.

Moonscape is divided into parts. To download a part, click on the "Vimeo" logo in the bottom right corner of the video of that part. This will take you to the Vimeo page of the video. Click on Download. To get the full documentary, just download all the parts. You may be required to be a Vimeo subscriber (subscription is free).

Thank you. I was looking for a single, complete download. This now makes sense.
