In two words: IN-CREDIBLE! I was really looking forward to these images, but they exceeded my expectations... judge for yourselves!

Full res image: http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/jpeg/PIA08816.jpg

Some info about this image and its significance: http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/MRO/news/mro-20061006.html

And finally, I strongly recommend some other images by MRO and MER Opportunity to get even more amazed :) (just type the codes in the search box at this site http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/targetFamily/Mars ): PIA08817, PIA08816, PIA08813, PIA08811, PIA08809, PIA08807. There are tons of other awesome pics, I can spend hours just seeing and seeing...

Simply amazing.  Like Squyers said in the press conference that has to be one of the greatest images ever returned from planetary science.
Toward the north there's a pretty shallow slope entering the crater.  I wonder if that's going to be their entery point.

amazing. I remember a while back NASA posted an image by one of the probes that they thought was the crashed polar lander. It just looked like 2 or 3 pixels to me. maybe MRO will be able to work its magic there too. Findinf beagle II is probably too much to hope for. oh the vikings and pathfinder will be interesting too.

oh, also MRO will probably be able to do some science or somthing.

Nice.  So all those Rover photos aren't the creation of George Lucas' Industrial Light & Magic, after all.  :)

Just being facetious

The best is yet to come with MRO; this is a spacecraft much more in the Landsat tradtion than any previous planetary probe. I can't wait to see the high-latitude local area seasonal variations with this guy!

When they first posted images last week it was ho-hum, but NOW I'm impressed. They are incredible. Maybe they will find MPL and Beagle.

Wait until LRO.

They don't know where to look for beagle except for a very wide area.

Well, there are boundary conditions, as even if it disintegrated during atmospheric entry, the debris would still be within the general landing elipse...

MRO's orbit is polar and low (~272 km), and it will have at least five, if not ten, years of operation, so it's very probable that it image all the surface spacecraft site along the way...

BTW, here's the home the massive camera that is taking all these pictures: http://marsoweb.nas.nasa.gov/HiRISE/

Awesome!

The camera taking the picture and the mast making the shadow that it shows both came from Ball.

This photo is making the rounds here, lots of proud people in Boulder and Broomfield.

JPL missions are really rewarding to work on because the science returns are so big.

I'm looking forward to Phoenix for that reason.

I just hope there's enough solar power at those high latitudes to get some pics when the ice starts to form.

I too am excited about seeing the Viking sites and the Sagan Memorial Station.  I also cannot wait until 2008/9 when we start getting photos back from Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.  It will be pretty cool to see the Apollo landing sites, crashed S-IVbs and LM ascent stages.

Ya me to appollo landing !
will be interesting to see where the little rover ended up in its endless circle around its lander? how many go arounds did it make ?
maybe a beting pool is in order here

and.................... we will soon know what became of polar lander and maybe some of those missing soviet landers

@ infocat- which circling rover are you referring to?

I would be surprised if there was anything left of the SIVB stages or LEM ascent modules... but the Apollo landing sites should be fascinating. Will LRO have an even higher resolution than MRO (no atmosphere and potentially lower orbit)?

infocat13, I am almost certain that none of the three rovers had the ability to be driven remotely. Once Scott, Young and Cernan parked them, that's where they stayed. Only their cameras could be controlled from Earth. I believe you are on the money Kaputnik about the lack of an atmosphere aiding the resolution of LRO. At the end of "From The Earth To The Moon" they do a CG, simulated tour of the Apollo landing sites showing the descent stages and the tracks, footprints and flags. Now we'll be able to see the real things. Albeit not as close as the scenes from "FTETTM" but they will be real. I'm a huge Google Earth fan and a while back the guys at Google did this http://moon.google.com/ I hope they update it with the upcomming LRO photos and release it as a standalone app. That would be awesome! They have a link asking for comments and suggestions about Google Moon so I'm emailing them this suggestion as soon as I finish this post.
