Is there a recording of this somewhere? I'd love to see it. But I'm a bit late for the livestream.

If you trawl the twitter tag you'll find some parts, but probably not the full event
Some teams have their own youtube copies

Also, an article
http://www.spaceflightinsider.com/space-centers/kennedy-space-center/university-students-innovate-nasa-robotic-mining-competition/
EDIT: also, in a slightly strange twist, official results are on facebook only, because making a web page for event is probably what .. out of budget ?

I'm not a big fan of the Robotic Mining Competition. It's what you do when you don't have a real program, funding real companies to produce the final hardware. During Constellation, NASA developed telerobots, crew vehicles, and logistics robots. Competitions are often for educational and PR reasons and don't actually get translated into real hardware. We need to get around to building the real hardware.

That's a student competition, to give teams an interesting real enough hands on engineering challenge. Better than a lot of robotics competitions with arbitrarily made up gamified tasks.
The expected outcome is not lunar probes, the expected outcome is a few energized young people setting their career on the path to eventually build real spacecraft.
I'm also a big fan of space-themed spelling bees
