OT for this thread... but what IS the status of MSL?  I heard it might be put off till 2011.  Also, did they go with the "Sky-Crane" or a more conventional lander, or still up in the air?

Can I sneak in a quick question before the action starts?

I've read MRO's velocity at orbit insertion is 11000 mph.  That seems a bit slow.  I understand orbital velocities for Earth and Mars are different but did it slow down between now and when it launched?

There's your problem. Currently all velocity and distance reports is Mars relative, not Earth relative. So that figure you have there is relative to Mars, not Earth.

This shouldn't be a very long event, but it'll certainly test the nerves given the wait for confirmation.

Let's hope NASA TV keeps up with the bandwidth. Live now.

Stardust, if you can caption anything, without spoiling your event viewing, that'd be great!
