Worst launch weather
« on: 01/02/2014 01:31 pm »
The weather here in the Northeast USA is HORRIBLE and it got me to thinking...

What is the worst weather that a launch has ever occured in?

I'm assuming Apollo 12 wasn't the worst, so I'm turning to you.

The first one that comes to my mind was Soyuz TMA-22 that launched in blizzard conditions.

I thought that was the standard way the Russians launched. If the weather was nice, I suspect they wouldn't know what to do with themselves ;)

I remember the world's media being invited to Baikonur for the 1988 IRS 1A (corrected - I originally said INSAT) launch and all that they saw was a distant orange glow that got higher and fainter in the sky as a blizzard raged.   Must be worse at Plesetsk, of course.

Apollo 12's lightning strike could have resulted in a LOC/LOM scenario. They just did not know enough about triboelectrification.

Worst weather (in hindsight) has to be at The Cape in January 28th 1986.

FLTSATCOM 6 was also launched in a thunderstorm but didn't fare as well as Apollo 12. If I remember correctly a lightning strike fried the guidance system and the rocket had to be destroyed by range safety.

I guess you'd be right. Such a sad date that needed no picture.
