Two more Soyuz missions are planned this year to launch Globalstar’s second-generation satellites

August 19, 2011 – Soyuz Flight ST24

Preparations for two additional Soyuz launches are now underway at Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan for missions to be performed by Arianespace’s Starsem affiliate before year-end in building up Globalstar’s second-generation satellite constellation.

Arianespace has been contracted to conduct a total of four such launches, carrying six satellites on each flight for Globalstar’s mobile satellite voice and mobile satellite handset data services.

Two missions with the second-generation satellites already have been performed – the first in October 2010, and the most recent last month.

A total of eight additional Globalstar second-generation satellites have been delivered to Baikonur Cosmodrome: six are being prepared for the upcoming flight in October, and the others will be ready as the initial two payloads for the following mission that also is planned in 2011.

To date, the highly reliable Soyuz vehicle has been used in 10 Globalstar launches.   Six Soyuz missions performed from February to November 1999 carried four first-generation Globalstar satellites each – with these 24 spacecraft representing one-half of the company’s original constellation.

In May and October 2007, two follow-on Soyuz missions lofted four additional satellites each to join the Globalstar constellation.  They were followed last October by the first mission contracted with Arianespace to orbit six of the second-generation spacecraft per launch.

The current flights for Globalstar use Soyuz 2 versions of the Russian-built medium-lift workhorse launcher, which has the ST-type payload fairing with a diameter of 4.1 meters and an overall length of 11.4 meters.  The six trapezoidal-shaped Globalstar satellites – supplied by Thales Alenia Space – weigh approximately 700 kg. each at liftoff and are mounted on a 6.7-meter-high conical-shaped dispenser system that is installed along with the Fregat upper stage under Soyuz’ payload fairing.

Is there a limit to how long the propellants can be on board before they have to be recycled? Like Shuttle's?

"The launch was previously expected on Oct. 8, 2011, however in the wake of the Progress M-12M crash, the third stage of the Soyuz rocket for the mission had to be shipped back to the manufacturer plant in the city of Samara for additional checks"

GLOBALSTAR ANNOUNCES UPDATED SATELLITE LAUNCH SCHEDULE
http://www.globalstar.com/en/index.php?cid=7010&pressId=695

Covington, LA , September 15 2011- Globalstar, Inc. (NASDAQ:GSAT), a leading provider of mobile satellite voice and data services to businesses, government and consumers, today announced that its third launch of six second-generation satellites is now planned for early December.

Launch services provider Arianespace informed Globalstar of the updated schedule. Launches will occur only after Russian Space Agency officials have completed inspections of certain Soyuz launch vehicles and the Globalstar launch is not expected to occur until after at least one other Soyuz flight, which is expected to be a mission to the international space station. Globalstar will provide an update regarding the timing of the fourth launch of six satellites when information becomes available.

Globalstar is currently deploying its second-generation satellite constellation and Arianespace has been contracted to conduct launches of six satellites each. The first two launches were successfully conducted in October of 2010 and July of 2011.

What happens with the Fregat for the Globalstar launch?

I believe that it has a shelf life of 90 days once fueled?  The Fegat was reported fueled at the end of August.  Which means 90 days would expire end of November.  With a "penciled in" launch of mid December, which would exceed the 90 day "shelf life".  Is it just the helium that needs recharged?  Does it have to be returned to Lavochkine?

Thanks

Moved to TBD on November 15th?  Sounds like another round trip back to Rome for the 9 pack-o-crap Thales Globalstar satellites.  It appears that somewhere along the way.  Thales has lost the basic "knowledge" to build a simple LEO satellite that will function more than 4 months on orbit without detrimental defects appearing.
