Overview:

NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston will host a briefing at 2 p.m. EST (1 p.m. CST) on Tuesday, Jan. 12, to preview the tasks and preparation for a spacewalk by astronauts living aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

The spacewalk will air live on NASA Television, and be streamed on NASA’s website. Coverage of the spacewalk will begin at 6:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 15, with the spacewalk scheduled to begin at 7:55 a.m.

Expedition 46 flight engineers Tim Kopra of NASA and Tim Peake of ESA (European Space Agency) will venture outside the space station’s Quest airlock to replace a failed voltage regulator that compromised one of the station’s eight power channels last November. The Jan. 15 spacewalk will be the third in Kopra’s career and the first for Peake, and the 192nd for maintenance of the space station.

This will be the 35th spacewalk using the U.S. Quest airlock, and will focus on replacing a voltage regulator called a Sequential Shunt Unit that failed Nov. 13, 2015. Additional tasks include deploying cables for the future installation of an International Docking Adapter that will accommodate U.S. commercial crew vehicles, and retrieving a broken light from a truss camera.

From the recent in-flight interviews it sounds like it'll be Kopra and Peake on the EVA.  Kopra - "Tim Peake and I will be preparing for another spacewalk coming up here in another couple weeks."  Apologies if this is old news.

It's absolutely worth posting. The excitement of Tim Peake heading out of the door means I'll be strapped to my seat from depress onwards for that one! ;D

Was training for this EVA done on earth?  Might be some decent material in there.

Well, it also might be that Kopra and Peake are preparing for spacewalks - Kopra as the EV and Peake in IV role. Spacewalkers haven't been verified officially via that PAO event. But, Kelly has gotten quite a few EVAs now, Kopra has now experience, and Peake did spacewalk training, so it looks good for him.

I doubt any of the current crew had time to train for SSU R&R except if, by luck, it was some skill-based EVA task that they trained for. All EVAs are being trained on the ground and procedures then generated and verified based on the results of that training by other astronauts in NBL and VR lab. By doing it that way the best possible EVA can be designed.

...and most likely the first time two "Tim's" spacewalking together.
Will look great to see the U.K. flag on an EVA suit!

Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) 3008 Checkout:  Kopra performed a checkout of EMU 3008 in order to verify all systems on the suit were functioning properly after its launch on OA-4.  During the activity, Ground teams monitored EMU telemetry and performed successful communication checks with the suit’s UHF Radios and hardline audio system. This EMU is planned for use during the Sequential Shunt Unit (SSU) EVA currently scheduled for January 15th.

Awesome! I suspected Tim would get an EVA at some point, but I didn't think it would be within a month of launching!

It looks like the EVA tasks will be:
. SSU-1B R&R
. IDA cable routing
. Node 3 NPV re-install
. Truss CLPA light removal

Surprised that they haven't elected to retract the TTCR as well, since it will be very close to the SSU worksite. Maybe it will be a get-ahead.

Do we have a good image looking back at the station from the approximate SSU worksite? I couldn't find one. It must be a great view.

Unfortunately this just misses his coverage on Stargazing Live from the BBC which runs the 12-14.

Quick question for the hive-mind: is this the first spacewalk with two same-first-name participants? Any clues as to what their callsigns (for want of a better word) will be?
