Wow, does H-II really use long pusher levers like this illustration seems to show? Are there other booster separation systems that work this way?

I could see them in one of the rocket cam shots that were shown after the launch.  They weren't live, though.

I wouldn't call them "pushers", though.

From the animation that was shown during the countdown, it looks like the boosters separate at the bottom, then swing out and away on the levers before falling off. 

It seems like it's a passive mechanism to ensure that the boosters get clear of the first stage, as opposed to using explosive bolts or thrusters.
The Space Age is just starting to get interesting.

Thanks, that's a good correction. Apparently these "separation arms" also allow the boosters to smoothly continue in flight after separation, rather than tumbling. See this close-up from the photo linked above. Aren't those three of the four boosters still flying?
